| The multiple pharmaceutical applications of chitosans have been reviewed in this paper. After describing its structure and physico-chemical properties, an overview of the use of this polymer in controlled release dosage forms as well as in other dosage forms to improve bioavailability and safety has been made. Furthermore, the capacity of chitosan to promote the intestinal and nasal absorption is analyzed including the discussion of the mechanisms of action. The authors also outline the newer applications of chitosans such as in antitumor therapy, vaccines delivery, gene therapy and cellular transplant. Finally, the safety of this polymer is reviewed putting in evidence its low toxicity and biocompatibility which make chitosan an exciting and promising excipient for the pharmaceutical industry for present and future applications. | |||
