Pese a su incuestionable presencia en el desarrollo vital de una gran parte de los seres humanos, la menopausia es un fenómeno raro en el contexto de los mamíferos. En la mayor parte de este grupo el envejecimiento fisiológico y el reproductivo se dan a la par y, habitualmente, se asocian a una muerte cercana. La menopausia, sin embargo, se refiere a una senescencia principalmente reproductiva que, en los humanos, se produce antes que su senescencia general y que no supone el fin de su trayectoria de vida. La senescencia biológica ocurre de forma paralela a otros procesos que configuran el proceso de envejecimiento humano.Despite its unquestionable presence in the vital development of a large part of human beings, menopause is a rare phenomenon in the context of mammals. In most mammals, physiological and reproductive ageing occur together and are usually associated with near death. Menopause, however, refers to a primarily reproductive senescence that, in humans, occurs earlier than their general senescence and does not represent the end of their life course. Biological senescence occurs in parallel with other processes that shape the human ageing process. |
