Macario, a feature film directed by Roberto Gavaldón in 1959, is a landmark in the representation of the Day of the Death in Mexican cinematography (1930-1960). This paper analyses the film from the new perspective of constructing national identity through the festival?s introspection, social context, iconography and lastly its impact.
